DIY Gram Flour Face Wash Powder for Sensitive Skin | Chronic Illness Skincare [with video]

I’ve never really found a face wash I like or one that has worked for my skin too well so I would regularly fall back on body soap which is definitely not great for the face in the long run. But a few years back, in a conversation with my mum, we thought about a powder face wash and so we did a bit of research and came up with today’s face wash recipe.

If you would like to watch a video version of this recipe, then you can here, if not then just scroll down for the text version…

So please remember that I am not a certified dermatologist or a medical professional in any capacity. I am a patient who deals with various medical conditions and I just wanna share what has worked for me. It’s always best to check with a medical professional before you decide to try anything I share. A lot of these DIY recipes are things my mum has taught me about skin and hair care and I’m just trying to pass that on.

This face wash powder has five ingredients of which one is optional.

I’m gonna share very small quantities just as an example, I usually make a large batch of this that lasts a really long time.

Okay now, first ingredient, gram flour – I’m taking just 2 teaspoon, but if you’re gonna make a larger batch then you can take 1 cup of it. (US readers buy this from Amazon here | India here)

Gram flour absorbs oiliness so it’s a helpful cleanser, it exfoliates dead skin very gently which also works to reduce fine hairs on the face and it’s a good de-tanner.

The second ingredient is oat flour – it’s basically rolled oats that I’ve ground in a food processor. I’m taking 2 teaspoons just to show you – but again, for a larger batch, you can take 1 cup of it. (Buy from US Amazon | India)

Oats really soften the skin by removing dead skin, but very importantly it’s an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant which helps to reduce acne.

Next is rose powder, 1 teaspoon of this or 1/2 cup if you’re making a larger batch. So rose powder doesn’t just smell amazing, but it’s also anti-bacterial, helps restore the skin’s PH balance, evens out skin tone and is known to help those with acne, eczema and other conditions that irritate the skin. (Buy from US Amazon | India)

The fourth ingredient is turmeric – for this we need just a pinch of turmeric but for a larger batch, 2 tablespoons should be good.

Turmeric is a favourite of many and it’s my favourite too because of its medicinal properties. It’s an anti-inflammatory, an antibacterial, heals the skin from conditions like acne, eczema and even psoriasis. And it helps reduce dark circles! (Buy from US Amazon | India)

The last ingredient is optional, it’s ground, dried lavender – I’m going to use a pinch here but like turmeric, 2 tablespoons is good for a larger batch. (Buy from US Amazon | India)

So lavender helps reduce acne, has anti-ageing properties, it is antiseptic, antibacterial and of course, it smells so nice and works well in combination with the rose powder which smells good too!

We mix all these dry ingredients properly – this mixing well is most important and whenever we want, we damp the face, take a teaspoon in the palm of your hand, add a few droplets of water to the face wash powder, then rub my palms and use it like a regular face wash on the face, which you rinse off with cool water and pat dry.

Now this can easily be used whenever you wish to wash your face because it’s pretty gentle, natural and the best thing is, you’re in control of the ingredients you’re choosing.

Quick Ingredients Recap:

Gram flour – 2 teaspoon / 1 cup (US readers buy this from Amazon here | India here)
Oat flour – 2 teaspoon / 1 cup (Buy from US Amazon | India)
Rose powder – 1 teaspoon / 1/2 cup (Buy from US Amazon | India)
Turmeric – pinch / 2 tablespoon (Buy US AmazonIndia)
Lavender dried ground – pinch / 2 tablespoon (US Amazon | India)

  1. I wouldn’t ever have thought of making a face wash from flour! Seems lovely and calming though, and rose is such a lovely fragrance too.

  2. I appreciate how you not only share how to prepare the mixture, but explain why each ingredient is included. Do you have a source for rose powder? I’ve never heard of it before.

  3. This sounds amazing. I remember using simple things like sesame oil and even chickpea flour before in my Ayurvedic regimen and it really helped. Love the video btw!
