Spoken Poetry: “Courage and I are In a Relationship” | How to Build Courage…

spoken poetry courage and I are in a relationship

I have a relationship with Courage. It’s an important relationship as it helps to fight and overcome my challenges, my battles – especially my chronic illnesses and anxieties. Here’s a slam / spoken poetry piece that I’ve written about it.

Courage and I are in a relationship

“Courage and I are in a relationship.
He’s kinda been my childhood sweetheart
From helping me up every morning
to keeping me from falling apart.

He’s introduced me to his friends,
Love, Truth, Beauty,Goodness, & Trust.
But I’ve kinda had problems
with them all, to understand them
and to adjust.
It’s been quite a learning
But Courage,
he’s always there, unflinching,
patient and robust.

He’s helped me believe
in Love again by taking
the support of Trust.
That getting hurt
is an essential
learning
for me to be
who I must.

He’s helped me see Beauty,
especially when acne
would erupt!

But,
But more so,
he’s helped me see
Beauty stand tall
even when put down
He’s helped me see
that Beauty doesn’t
seek validation
she doesn’t need a crown.
She sticks to her purpose,
a radiating noun!
She reminds me
that what I seek
is within me,
I just need to dig,
a little further down.

You know what’s the weirdest though?
It’s when Goodness and I met
I just couldn’t see him,
He seemed unreal
and a little hard to get.
I could hear all that he said
but it didn’t seem true
“Can one really be so nice
And survive with such a virtue?!”
That’s when Courage
asked me to have some faith
To follow what Beauty shared
to dig a little deep,
to unearth and shape.
To realise that Goodness
is right there,
if I wish to see,
But connecting with him
was always up to me.
And so I did
And there he was, entwined
In the company of Truth
thriving away
making everything so genuine,
with no filter to remove.

Courage has been the best boyfriend ever
he’s helped pave the way,
he’s given me strength and
knocked some sense
when I haven’t been okay.

His companionship
has allowed me to uncover
that I’m not defined
by my fears, sadness, pain
or by some random another.

Instead,
I’m my own person,
learning, growing, failing,
falling, but, becoming tougher.

I’m not defined by my
poor health or silly choices
But how I fight, learn, be kinder
and recover.

I’m not defined by my mistakes
But whether, I forgive myself
and the other.

I’m not defined by my flaws,
as long as I work to improve,
to be a better person, to develop,
to discover.

Courage tells me to work on myself
And that he’ll always have my back.
Coming to the fore when needed
But I feel, he should now,
sit back and relax,
But then he doesn’t wish to,
he says, he’s doing fine
I think he’s just excited
with our journey
where we seek and find.”
